Mod Post: Off-Topic Tuesday

In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.

Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.

The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.

Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.

It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.

The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than scans_daily. But please, no doomscrolling, for your own sake.

I will note that the decision to pave over the White House Rose Garden whilst also planning a new massive gold trimmed ballroom says something about POTUS 47's sense of aesthetics, and what it says is a word I won't use in mixed company.

On the good news side, London's Trans Pride event for 2025 had a reported 100,000 in attendance.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day got a teeny, tiny ilttle teaser and does seem to showcase a more classic Spider-suit than we've seen in a while.

Eyes of Wakanda seemed to drop without any warning at all. I didn;t even know this was a thing that was happening until this dropped.

(Okay, both of those were sort of ON topic, but I can live with the shame)

NS: Nearly 400 Artists Threaten to Boycott Angoulême Festival

https://www.dailycartoonist.com/index.php/2025/08/03/nearly-400-artists-boycott-angouleme-festival/

Nearly 400 artists and 12 associations are signatories to a petition threatening to boycott the 2026 Angoulême International Comics Festival. The petition accuses the festival’s contracted management company, 9eArt+, of retaliating against a female employee who reported a rape at the 2024 event and criticizes the festival’s organizers (FIBD) for not only resisting efforts to replace 9eArt+ but is considering a merger with the company. The signatories state that if FIBD does not open the management contract to an open RFP, they will call for a “massive boycott” of the next festival to be held in January 2026.

Signatories include four of the last five Grand prix winners: Anouk Ricard (2025), Posy Simmonds (2024), Julie Doucet (2022), Chris Ware (2021), as well as notable American cartoonists: Art Spiegelman (Grand prix 2011) and Alison Bechdel. You can see the full list of associations, and signatories artists on MesOpinions. Additionally, at the time of this writing, 2,322 other individuals have signed the petition.

NS: The Everlooping World of Cicadas Made Easier

Higurashi ga Naku koro ni (When Cicadas Cry) is a series of visual novels that betray the point of the medium – namely, the plot is not interactive, at least not in the original releases. The series feature a group of friends from a tiny primary school in a climactic but isolated and equally tiny village which holds many secrets. In each installment, the children play together, learn of the mysteries of the setting, become paranoid and start killing each other in gruesome ways. Every new chapter introduces new and exciting ways to go crazy and die, and then slowly reveals the clues as to what exactly is happening and why. Since the series have numerous chapters, it may be difficult to approach, which is a shame since in my opinion it’s a fantastic mystery story and source of inspiration for many stories following it. For the help of potential new readers, I made this guide of key stories presented in order that makes the story most approachable. A fair warning: the series runs on violence against children, and the violence and abuse is very graphic and very gory, which the anime tends to tone down but the manga often exploits to the full potential. The most sexual material is barely suggestive in the story proper (plus one bathroom scene that was censored in English edition), and slightly spicier in extra chapters though.Read more... )
